skin detox and the B word

Last week I talked about JUICING as a way of cleansing and adding extra nutrition to your day.

What about detoxing the skin?
Dior has come up with a fun mask that is the latest girlie product on my vanity.

This mask is supposed to restore and eliminate toxins on skin that's feeling a little sluggish.
Check it out here

I'm also loving this Dior nude lipstick.  It's a pretty shade for the spring and doesn't dry my lips out.

                                        vignette design

                                                                     Vignette Design

The other day I was talking to my friend Dolores over at Vignette Design about the challenges with regards to SKIN as we approach mid life.  She's noticed overall loss of elasticity on her face, and her eyes have a tired look.

BOTOX..." I don't have anything against it, haven't tried it but I'm a chicken and will probably never do anything to my face.  I'm really wanting to stay
true to that, but sometimes when I look in the mirror, I'm horrified!  haha!
I see lots of women my age who have had so much botox that they look permanently surprised though"  .. Dolores

I believe most women want to stay "true" to their face and worry about LOOKING frozen or like they've had something done.

Each face is unique as are our expressions and for that reason, our character lines will form specific to our own personality and the way we use our face.

For me it's my eyes.  I have deep lines around my eyes or "crows feet".  I am not overly expressive on my forehead so my lines are not so deep there.

If someone has a deep crease somewhere (between the brows for example).  Is there anything wrong with softening it up a bit?

I say NO. If you feel that a little botox will make a deep furrow a little less noticeable, then I say.. great! I hope it helps make you feel better about yourself. If you chose to do nothing?  I say ..great! Good for you and whatever you decide..YOU look fabulous!   I respect your right to decide what's best for you.

....women supporting women.....

What I'm saying here is that WE as women should support each other and not judge based on our own personal thoughts on the matter.

Keep in mind there's a huge difference between getting a deep line softened vs. attempting to erase all lines. Extremes in any direction aren't good in my opinion. Most people hear the word botox and they visualize a frozen face.  An expressionless face is not the goal for most women that choose to have botox.

....cost....

Botox lasts 3 to 4 months and then you need to go back and spend lots of money getting more put in.  It's a pricey cosmetic procedure to engage in on the regular basis.

HEALTHY skin is most important to me.  If your skin is cared for properly (this includes eating well .. taking care on the inside) then you will have a nice glow and attention will be diverted from imperfections.

Last night I received this beautiful picture of the Space Needle and Seattle sunset from my daughter.
I said.. Wow! It's so pretty! When did you take it?
She said she didn't .. it's from her boyfriend's balcony..

Then I started thinking... hmmm, maybe it's not such a nice picture..WHY is he sending it?  ..and most importantly.. why do I feel a twinge of discomfort?

My daughter is 21 (almost 22!) and I am confident that she will make good choices.  It's still difficult to let go when it comes to dating and all that.

A nice lip conditioner!  You also can't beat plain old chapstick.

So, now that we've had time to think about it..

What do you think? Yes or No to BOTOX?  If you had the $$$ to do it for a special occasion, would you do it?

I say sure .. but do it for the right reasons. To enhance your natural beauty .. not to try to hide the fact that you are aging.  Aging happens and acceptance of our bodies is important.

Make the most of your NATURAL
beauty.  Accentuate your prettiest features.  Be proud and confident.
Be comfortable in your skin.

SMILE.
GIVE.
LOVE.

This is TRUE beauty.
..and this is something you MUST watch.
It's just about a minute and I know you will enjoy it.

I'm packing up and heading somewhere that's sunny and warm to get some much needed family and personal time in.
Hopefully I will have a few pictures on instagram and if time works in my favor, I may be able to post as usual and visit you.

Have a great week ahead!

  2. OMG! That video is priceless (especially since we are big dog lovers here). Regarding the "B" word, not a fan. Mainly because I have seen way too many people go overboard and they look frozen, surprised or mechanical (think ventriloquist dummy). I remember Dr. Phil doing a show awhile back and this one woman was wanting to have all this stuff done. Something he said really resonated with me. "You earned those lines...through laughter, through tears, through living life." basically...It reminds me of my answer when friends ask now that we are empty nesters if we would like to go back in time, to when the girls were little. While there is always a part of every parent that wishes time would stop (or at least slow down), my answer is always NO...it would mean not having experienced all the wonderful moments that we have had with them up until this day. I also have to think about the example I am setting for my daughters. If I am constantly nit-picking about my appearance...they will too! Same goes for weight. Being healthy and happy is what matters, not the number of wrinkles, not the number on the scale (as long as you are HEALTHY). And lets face it, there are some great products out there that do wonders for those lines without breaking the bank!! Enjoy your time with family. It was a beautiful sunny 70+ degree day here today. Sending my baby back to the university tomorrow. It has been fun having her home. Oh, and I totally can relate to the boyfriend thing (the oldest is 23).

  3. My dear Leslie!

GOOD AFTERNOON! I love this conversation. I believe it taking care of ourselves the best we can, eat right, get enough sleep, groom ourselves....barring any hormonal changes that can cause any skin conditions (that happened to me), I choose to let it be. Cleansing from the inside out is the best for me, and you feel better. I love the topics you bring up, and I know you live by them, I can tell by your beautiful face in your photos!

Enjoy this weekend! We are having another cold snap with snow tonight, but spring really is coming down the pike!

    Hugs, Anita

  4. Hi Leslie~That first photo is one of my favorites (winter whites with a touch of sparkle!). As for the 'b' word...I'll admit that at 51 I've tried it here and there (class reunion, BFF wedding, etc.) more for a special occasion than the regular routine. It does have a nice improvement on my little mid brow furrow which tends to make me look worried. That said, I am not a fan of anything that requires ongoing maintenance (like nails). I would rather spend my cash on travels, a fabulous meal and/or life enriching experiences than beauty maintenance. The glow from being healthy, getting enough rest and keeping ourselves fulfilled and happy is the best beauty fix.
As for the daughter(s) growing up process....I have 3 step-daughters (now in their late 20's). Did I mention the furrow between my brows? ;) Just remember you have spent her entire life raising her to be the woman she is becoming today. She is lucky to have a mom like you and I'm sure she is on a wonderful path.
Have a fabulous trip! Can't wait to see photos. We still have 2 weeks until our beach vacay-can't wait! Enjoy!
    xx, Heather

  5. Dear Leslie,

I totally agree with all you have said - eating well and taking care of ourselves shows on the outside.
The Dior face mask sounds lovely.
On Friday I went for a Chanel facial which was gorgeous and if you buy a few skincare and makeup products, pays for this treatment. A good way to have a little pampering and make you feel special.
As for Botox, I have never been down that road, as I do think there are so many that do not look good with it. I am a little bit of a scaredy cat, especially with the long term effects, it may have on a person.
    Enjoy your time away
    Hugs

  6. Greetings,

I just turned 60 and have yet to alter my appearance via anything artificial. I'm choosing to be my true self, figuring there's nothing wrong with that. I take good care of my skin, facials serums, etc. and eat from our garden or the farmers market. Why does our society feel the need to put women in a box as they age? I think the Europeans have the right idea, embrace your age because with it comes lots of experience and hopefully wisdom.

  7. Who needs any more happiness than that video gives? Precious!

I look fabulous if I don't put my glasses on when looking in the mirror. I do need the glasses and a magnifying mirror to apply mascara and pluck facial hairs. After that, I don't look into the mirror again! No botox - I wouldn't be able to tell if I'd had it done. :-)

    Cheers!

    1. Lol! Linda you are so funny!! Yes! This is why my eyes are going .. it does soften things up. You bring up an excellent point. Some women have it done and it doesn't really work to their expectation. My crows feet are pretty deep .. so I don't bother.

  8. Leslie... thanks for the tip on the Dior mask. Will definitely visit the Dior counter in the very near future. May even send it to sista and Bf for a birthday gift. Then again, maybe not, I don't want them looking better than me. As for the B word, been there, tried that, wish I could say there was a lot of difference. LOVE your reaction to your daughters photo. Right there with you!

  9. I've seen that video and it is adorable!!! I don't know that I'll ever do botox because it is a toxin. I do believe in taking care of myself to the best of my ability. Always love hearing about products that are proven to give good results without the toxin & knife :)
    Enjoy your quiet time...

  10. I don't know about botox. I think to each her own and I don't judge. I've just seen too many bad examples of it being overdone and looking unnatural, but I think with just the right amount it can look totally natural. But I think if it makes someone feel better about herself and gives her more confidence, I'm all for it!

  11. Leslie,

Such a great post, I look forward to your tips-Biggest take away for me is. Women do not consistently support one-another. I work in a female based industry, so many times we are really not there for one-another. As for Botox-why not! I find as my skin ages(not me of course!) a little perk here and there just makes me feel better. Biggest criteria for any type of cosmetic procedure-research your physician and always referrals from people you know.
    Hugs!!

  12. Leslie, may I suggest a couple products that I have used and have seen excellent results. Mary Kay has a new Volu Firm Repair System for the 50+ woman who is showing signs of ageing. I love this product and you can check it out at my website, http://libbyday@marykay.com. Also, I am using Nerium that is producing amazing results with the very issues you mentioned. Contact me if you need additional information. It sure beats Botox injections.

  13. Great conversation starter, Leslie! First off, let's find out who takes care of Jane Fonda! She looks gorgeous and she surely has had some help along the way. I cringe at the thought of anyone doing something to my face for fear of not looking like "me" when it's done. I know my face and I've seen it age, along with my neck and hands and boobs! I believe in good, no, excellent skin care and the right make up to enhance the good and not so good. And I agree with Jemma...I heard a quote the other day, "There is a special place in hell for women that don't help women". That said, let's all be true and happy and our best selves, whatever shape or form that takes. BYW, love the quote and video and look forward, as a new follower, for more fantastic discussions!

  15. Oh my! I LOVE that video!! So so precious!

Wonderful post, Leslie! I don't see anything wrong with a little help as long as your expectation is reasonable. I've not had the desire to try botox or any other cosmetic treatment YET, but who knows? Never say never... ;)
I'm with you about your daughter....I have one who'll turn 24 next week, and I'm always worrying about her. Oh, to me a mother....

I am just too scared to use Botox for myself. We haven't really seen the long term effects on the over use of Botox in the face. Maybe when I'm older:) great post Leslie! xo Caroline

  19. I agree with your friend. I really do not ever want to do botox. My mother just turned 60 and is beautiful. I just want to do what you said have really good glowing skin that will keep me from noticing any lines that I don;t like. I'm 42 and so far...I do not have any lines. My forehead is small so there aren't have lines there really. I do have tired eyes and my eyes tend to get irritated by my make-up. Hey what you do think about coffee? I started drinking it 2 years ago when I turned 40? Is it really bad for the skin?

  20. Never did botox, have been tempted on more than one occasion but besides my aversion to needles I get nervous thinking about what I am injecting......I am getting much better about taking care of my skin and not taking advantage of having good skin. If down the road I need more, I will address it then. I now there are no magic bullets.....but keeping the skin well hydrated and out of the sun are two things everyone can do to help look their best.
That video is going to keep a permanent smile on my face all day!

  21. OK Leslie now I’m having a tough time trying to remember what you just posted about since I’m still laughing over the puddle joy! I love that little boy’s happiness. I get a facial once a month to have my pores cleaned out. The nice thing is they get the lymph nodes working and everything moving so my skin naturally helps itself. I tried botox once right between my eyes and never again I hated the way it felt besides having a needle injected into your face hurts and I’m a sissy.

Enjoy your holiday and Happy St. Patrick's Day!

  22. I think if you have the extra money and you have a special occasion like your children's wedding or a class reunion go for it. Just be careful to get just enough and not too much. I don't however like the Hollywood look of that shiny and taunt skin. I also like a few lines on the face, isn't that what living life is all about.

As long as you dont get obssesed with your looks like Michael Jackson, Its fine. Its all about balance in life.

Great topic...and a tough one. Most everyone I know has done botox...I haven't yet. Honestly, it's the darn bags under my eyes that is driving me crazy instead of lines. I guess it's a case of when you focus on one thing, you don't on another. I have spent the past few months eating better, working out harder and just trying to take good care of myself. The aging...well, I just want to do it gracefully.

I like your comment about supporting the personal decisions made by any of our friends to use B. or other means to make them happy. I just re-watched The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and it served to reconfirm my determination to age authentically. I will always use products to help that along but am determined to stay "authentic". That said, when I see myself in photographs, I'd be lying if I said I think I look like I feel! LOL!

I do botox and LOVE it, my doctor won't make me look frozen, he would not dare! I still move my face, by between my brows, my frown is terrible since I was a child (: and I don't want to look angry...so that is what saves me from that.
it is a great thing and invention. I am more worried about my face going south and slaggish appearance, that is not gonna be rescued by any botox ...or anything, I won't do fillers and other cosmetic surgery things...just need to age gracefully ...but I am booking a relaxing spa trip!! (:
    have a great family time!

  32. I agree with EVERYTHING you said here. I just love coming here and reading your uplifting posts. I don't think I would be against softening some lines here and there, but totally agree that trying to erase every line and striving for absolute perfection will only end in looking completely false and therefore strange. We shouldn't be so afraid of aging, and I do think that becoming overly obsessed with it will result in the wrong focuses in our lives. I think I would attempt botox lightly someday when lines start to deepen, but again hoping to never be obsessed. I've used Dior Capture before and loved it! I switched over to argan oil for now, but may return to Dior someday. Oh and this video?! Ahhh adorable!!

  57. Hi Leslie,

What a truly 'uplifting' post! No, I wouldn't attempt Botox or fillers, never mind a face lift. I've been told I have good skin and don't look my age (49), but I see the difference in the last couple of years, especially with the onset of hormone fluctuations and perimenopausal poofiness - all over. Still, rather keep to the vigilant cleansing and supposed age-defying creams, try harder to deflate the morphing muffin top and de-stress to FEEL and LOOK young, in general, than looking frozen, both physically and emotionally. But that's just me.

More importantly, the featured video made my heart smile, what else could anyone ask for?

    looking at others my age,
    and mine are definitely worse.
On the bright side, the rest
of my face is in pretty good
shape : ) So, I just tell myself
    that I've laughed and smiled
a lot and that the crow's feet
    are like little medals awarded
    for a long life, well-lived!

Hope you had a great break.
We got home a few days ago
    from Palm Springs; heaven!
