Having the right gadgets and gizmos in the kitchen can make all the difference in terms of time and
effort when preparing a family meal or entertaining a group of friends.
Here are a few things you will see in my kitchen.
I fill this wood Salt Keeper with kosher salt. The easy top works perfectly for a quick sprinkle of salt on my oatmeal, pasta, or roast chicken.
This is a permanent fixture on my stove during the dark, cold winter months as I prepare a variety of hearty stews and soups. The multi-coat enamel over the cast iron ensures a slow and even distribution of heat.
Anything can go in this pan... fish, chicken, spaghetti sauce, pasta, etc..
I have a few different cutting boards. This one is used for anything other than poultry or beef.
Cookie trays, jelly roll pans.. wonderful for cookies and pastries.
Do you bake with Parchment Paper?
It makes clean up easier and everything (especially cookies) bake more evenly. I like also like this brand. I's available bleached or unbleached, FYI.
I use this little chopper whenever an onion is involved..otherwise I'm crying a river.
This little gadget is small, easy to assemble and when I'm finished chopping it goes right in the dishwasher. When it stops chopping well I toss it and buy a new one (it's fairly inexpensive).
Mexican Breakfast Casserole
Emeril Lagasse {recipe}
I prepared this casserole for a brunch we hosted last weekend and it was a huge hit so I wanted to share the recipe. I mixed mild sausage with Chorizo and left out some of the chili powder.
Instructions call for Poblano Chili.
To help keep me organized, I prepared the casserole and a few other items the night before. If I leave everything to the last minute I get a little grumpy so I've learned over the years to choose a menu will allow me to prepare things ahead of time.
The scene..
It was a relaxed evening, my work week was over, a movie was on and I was multi-tasking.. sipping wine, checking my on-line recipes etc..
Layla begging by my feet.
..a warning on chili..
later that evening,
my fingers were kinda itchy and my lips started to burn. It was the Pablano's .. I never washed my hands! I cut them up, touched my computer and touched my glass.
Pablano's aren't that spicy but it's possible I have a sensitivity or could be mildly allergic.
How do you do with spice? Do you like it or are you sensitive to it?
Everything was fine the following morning and I resumed meal preparation.
Because this was a brunch and called for cheese.. I turned immediately to brie.
Tina shared this wonderful Brie recipe on her blog last week and I wanted to try it. So easy, you just roll out store bought bread dough and place a wheel of brie in the center. On top of that I put cranberries (dried is all I had but Tina used fresh that she marinated over night) Then I added a brown sugar, slivered almonds, and a little butter, wrapped it up like a little package and baked it for about 25 minutes in a 350 degree oven.
Simple, delicious, and it was gobbled up instantly.
It's best to eat this right out of the oven.
My sweet friend is diving in .. love that! We aren't shy when it comes to food!
How is your week going?
xxleslie

I have a Staub too - a big black one that I adore.
ReplyDeleteBreakfast casseroles are the only way I can stand to eat eggs. And since I love Mexican food, I will have to try this recipe.
Parchment paper is my best friend in the kitchen. I don't know how I used to cook without it!
Lovely post, Leslie!
xo
Your kitchen is clearly better organised than mine - I have so many non-matching items it's ridiculous... Brunch at your house looks great, will have to try that camembert recipe, it sounds amazing! xo
ReplyDeleteI generally use a silplat mat instead of parchment but if I have multiple things going at once parchment works perfectly too! That brie looks amazing. I'm craving warm food in this cold weather!!

ReplyDeleteAll the food looks amazing...wonderful!!The mexican thing, yummy!! I love cooking away in the kitchen, it's relaxing to me. I think I'll make cookies this week or something like that!! I hope your week is going well so far!! xx
ReplyDeleteyou have inspired me to buy some new cooking utensils! Lovely post:)
ReplyDelete~Anne
You and I are too much alike...our kitchen has all but the salt keeper and that fabulous Staub pot! I will have to look into that!! And, am always up for a new recipe.
ReplyDeleteIt's no surprise your kitchen is well organized with essential tools. I find that a salt keeper makes salt dispensing so much more convenient as well. That brie package looks amazing! I'm not shy when it comes to food either :)

Even your cooking utensils are beautiful!!! The food looks so delicious! The brie looked almost to pretty to eat. You inspire me. And also make me hungry.
ReplyDeleteThe kitchen is my favorite place in the house! I love to cook and I too have a set of All-Clad measuring cups and spoons. I also have the odd-size measuring cups and spoons (1.5 cups, 2 tablespoons, etc). They are super handy. Thanks for sharing with us your list of kitchen essentials.
ReplyDeleteClaudia
Everything looks so delicious! I have the same issue with jalapenos - they burn my skin! I learned it the hard way once. Not fun! So now I always wear gloves when I chop them just to be safe.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the right tools make cooking so much easier and efficient. An All-Clad pan is on my wish list right now!
Hi Leslie! The Brie recipe was a hit in my house when I had girls over during xmas(((: Tina is genius.
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen equipment summary is a great idea, should include it in my cookbook. Clad pots have been in my eyesight recently and so far haven't tried them as I use Mauville copper pots ... They look very good though. Sorry to eat you had a reaction to chilli, once touching my lips was also but burning ... But yours sounds a bit worse... Do it few more times and your body will adjust(: like a bee sting kinda idea... Or don't listen to me at all!!(: Big hug z
The brie dish looks sensational...I've got to try this soon...hey, tomorrow ;-)
ReplyDeleteJust LOVE the kitchen, best room in the house and it's where everybody always congregates.
Thank you for the recipe, Leslie.

I love seeing what kitchen items others love to use. I definitely agree about the jelly roll pans... I use mine all the time. Depending on what I'm making, I will sometimes use parchment paper (mostly for something like making homemade granola). But if I'm baking cookies, I like to use the Silpat baking sheet liners. They're fantastic!
ReplyDeleteLOVE all your kitchen gadget shares.. It's totally making me want new baking items in our kitchen, mine are quite old! AND that Brie recipe looks delicious! Brie is one of my favorites, but everytime I try to make it the rind part is to tough to dig into it :( Yours looked great, did you find that with this one, or do you cut the rind down? ~Bre
ReplyDeleteBoy, do I love kitchens gadgets and utensils too. I keep thinking I should start splitting some of my things up and putting them away for my kids apartments. Your Staub pot is beautiful. What a delicious brunch you hosted.
ReplyDeleteLeslie,
ReplyDeleteI have nearly all the kitchen goodies you shared except for the All-Clad measuring cups and spoons. I have the pans and love them! My daughter in law bought me pre-cut parchment sheets for Christmas...so much nicer than having to try to get the roll to lay flat until you get your item on it.
I've done that same thing when I've chopped peppers...I'm now super careful. I literally felt like I had burns on my skin wherever the pepper touched me.
Yummy recipes, I will have to try them both.
Karen
A well-stocked wine) makes cooking so much more enjoyable and we love your picks! Our soup/stew pot gets used every weekend in the winter and we'll have to try some of your recipes. Funny you should say something about your lips and fingers after you touched the poblanos - they have capsasin which is what gives them the heat and it is also used in a cream we put on sore and tired muscles. The same thing happened to us the other day when we didn't wash our hands well!

I have a weird obsession with measuring cups LOL
ReplyDeleteYou will find quite a variety in my drawers
I use to use parchment paper all the time until I discovered the silpat

Great post, Leslie, I love seeing what others find useful in the kitchen. I like giving the wooden salt boxes along with a pretty box of salt as a gift for those who have everything!
ReplyDeleteOh Leslie, Your tale about the peppers reminded of a time when I chopped serrano peppers and stuck my hands in hot water. The heat of the water opened the pores allowing the oils of the pepper to be absorbed. I was miserable for twenty four hours. It was most definitely a lesson learned.
ReplyDeleteI have so many of the same pieces. I agree, the right equipment makes anything easier and more fun. Bonnie
Hi Leslie~I have but one thought right now...I want to live in Washington and come to one of your fabulous brunches. You certainly know how to entertain lady! I have made a recipe very similar to the brie....and it is to die for.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the lovely peek into your weekend!
xx, Heather
Hi Leslie - I enjoyed your kitchen tips and the recipes...thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteNice post!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a cook, not a good one at least. I'm always buying gadgets and they end up collecting dust after a few uses. That should tell you I'm not a real cook.
However, my kids got us a juicer for Christmas and boy, do I love this thing! I'm a juicing fool at the moment. Doubt this one will collect any dust...love it!
I do want to try the Brie recipe tho...looks delish!
I have many of the same tools in my kitchen but there are a few here that I need to check out....thanks for the thoughts....
ReplyDeleteI've chopped jalepenos in the past and forgot to wash my hands....rubbed my eye and it burned all night long.
Leslie your Staub pot is beautiful and I do actually need one, as I am starting to cool again. Oh and the brie recipe looks delish!

I'm sure you must be an amazing cook judging by your kitchen wares and of course the food photographed which made my mouth water! I have to agree with you that the equipment makes all the differnce. I'm addicted to our cast iron large cooking pot too in winter. There's nothing better than a meal from that.

Your Staub casserole dish with the little pig on top is so cute - I imagine it's very similar to the Le Creuset ones that I can't manage without! I'm like you in that I prefer to make ahead where possible otherwise I can't relax and I'm so cautious now when chopping peppers after a similar experience - thanks for the recipe - ideal for the icy cold UK!

Many of my favorite gadgets..do you have a Sur La Table near you? LOVE that store...I could literally spend all day there. Don't use parchment paper but then again I don't do a lot of baking, more cooking. That casserole looks sooooo good!! I will have to try it. Thanks for the brie shoutout, isn't it so good?? I could literally eat an entire one by myself!! Enjoy tour day Leslie....
ReplyDeleteGood morning beautiful Leslie!
ReplyDeleteI am SO LATE HERE! I taught yesterday and time flew by....the kitchen is my favorite room of the house. I have EVERYTHING necessary as you show here EXCEPT the parchment paper for cookies. That is something I have to start using because I can see how it could make clean up so much easier. I love my cookware and I also use copper which is so lovely for cooking slowly.
Enjoy a cozy day my friend! Anita
So many wonderful tips this morning, Leslie. I use parchment paper for cakes, but never thought to use them on a cookie sheet. Will have to give that a try.
ReplyDeleteMary Alice
i'm all-clad obsessed - they last a lifetime and u can never go wrong!!
ReplyDeletePS – my friend is gonna be on Millionaire Matchmaker on Bravo TONIGHT come check it out on the bog :o)
you're a goddess i tell you. please tell me how to impress upon my sons that certain cutting boards are for certain tasks! it's hopeless!
ReplyDeleteneed a new mini chopper--thanks for recommending this. and the brie looks so fancy and delish. must try!
michele
I love catching up on your blog Leslie! Your Layla is just so cute! I also need that mini chopper & you are not alone, I too have the same reaction to the chilis:). Ok, I am officially HUNGRY, off to each lunch:. Have a great weekend, Jen
ReplyDeleteI always keep Kosher salt at the ready on my stove top and on my kitchen counter. And I love my big dutch oven Le Crueset ( sp?) Thanks for the recipes, they both look good. Note to self.....WASH hands :)
ReplyDeleteLeslie, This is so perfect for now. I really like to take stock of all I have in the kitchen this time of year and clear out and add a few new and nicer items. Great suggestions. I love that salt cellar and the all-clad items are always such good quality. I have to say I'm a parchment junkie now and couldn't get by without it. I like the If You Care brand also and they make cupcake liners too.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try your brie recipe out this weekend. It looks amazing!
Have a good one!
xx

Oh, all delicious things and beautiful food!! We both love to cook but honestly our kitchen gadgets are all old and beaten up. But they all work! It is like an industrial back kitchen at our house. We make do! But I want to start buying one good pan every year. We got a Staub pot in France (for like half the price) and carried it back in a back pack. It weighed a ton! You've given me a great idea for a blog post....!
ReplyDeletexo Terri
OMG we are seriously soul sisters....I either have or want everything on your kitchen list! I love to cook, and I love kitchen pretties. I want some mini Staub dutch ovens! (one in every color).....
ReplyDeleteLayla looks like the best kitchen buddy and official taste-tester! :D
xo,
RJ
Oh my goodness gracious, i want to be hanging out in your kitchen! I pretty much have all those things, except the parchment paper and the chopper... It was fun to see what you use, and realize i use many of the same things! I love the visual of you drinking some wine and enjoying yourself in the kitchen, and i'm with you, it's better to prepare things before hand...
ReplyDeleteCindy
My All-Clad cookware and parchment paper are staples in my kitchen. Need that salt keeper! Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteLove this list of great kitchen items. I really want to get one of those All-Clad pans. And funny that you mention the pepper incident. I chopped a few jalapenos by hand a couple of months ago and washed them several times but I still had burning around my thumbnail and under my nail. It lasted for two days. Learned my lesson - will use a chopper! :-)
ReplyDeleteJayme @ Her Late Night Cravings
I do bake with parchment paper. I also have several of the tools you use. My problem is never having all the ingredients on hand when the urge to cook comes on.
ReplyDeleteI use all-clad as well, love the lightness of it. I started to collect the yellow Le Creuset but had to chuck out some because it burned on the bottom (which apparently is supposed to be impossible but somehow I managed it)
ReplyDeleteHi, Leslie - Thanks for the recipe link. We love spicy food so the chili peppers will not be a problem. I'd enjoy this breakfast casserole with a salad for dinner. It's freezing here in DC.....but sunny :) No snow yet.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend,
Loi
I love to cook... in Amsterdam you don't have so many nice cooking stores as in the us like my favorite Williams Sonoma!!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I have to buy something for the kitchen only because of it's look :) I like the blue pot with the pig...
ReplyDeleteI love to look at Layla behaviour :) She is so sweet :))
One day my brother started to cry eating supper. He ate some species of paprika. I culdn't believe him, so I tried... and I ran to the bathroom. My lips were hot and swollen... :) I had to put them under the stream of cold water :)
Good weekend Leslie!
Hi Leslie,
ReplyDeleteI love to cook too and it really does help to have good cookware and gadgets. I sometimes find some of the chilli's a little too hot and you do have to take care with washing your hands afterwards. I have a Le Crueset casserole which I love the make stews and casseroles and use it such a lot in winter.
the brie recipe looks delicious and we are having friends around tomorrow, so may do this.
Have a happy weekend
hugs
Carolyn
Hi Leslie,
ReplyDeleteGreat gadgets for all the many different tasks and tricks for great results!
Have a great weekend,
Poppy xo
Hi Leslie,
ReplyDeleteSo true on the cookware, I too have All Clad cookware and can't live without that kind of cooking experience. You also have my measuring cups :)
I am going to copy your recipe and give it a try, you make it sound and taste so yummy!
Love all your beautiful culinary touches.
See you soon and all the beauty in your presentation.

Oh how delicious is that CHEESE! It is my dinner time so I best get into the kitchen and start my dinner, and what a great stop HERE to give me ideas! I just wanted to thank you so much for coming to visit my post. May we all be enchanted with the dawn of wonders my dear. Anita
ReplyDeleteYou are so right....it makes cooking a lot easier if you have great cookware and knives!
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me that I need new measuring cups - the cuter the better! And I love my cast iron pan too. I have no idea what I did before!
