Walking in the woods and a few odds and ends

Whew!! Glad this week is over with! Too much going on and I was a bit under the weather. You know when you have that achy, tired feeling.. maybe sinus pressure too?  It's no fun.  I do everything I can to take care of things without heading in to the doctor, but this time I needed modern medicine. Hopefully a restful weekend will help.

This is what my morning looks like as the sun is coming up. I took the top photo a few days ago and the one below was taken this morning.

This week mother nature had her way with our trees :) and removed the leaves.  The tree trunks look so peaceful and still when their leaves are gone.

I'm heading out for a walk. It's my quiet time and walking helps clear my head.

Walking with my friends is a great way to catch up AND exercise. At the end of our walk we get a latte or tea ~ an incentive to walk quickly!

The trail is covered in leaves. Layla is saying.. "stopping again?"

Walking UP hills is great for cardiovascular fitness, low impact (easy on the joints) and there is always the reward of a pretty view at the top.

If you hike a lot this is a great shoe line. These boots are warm, supportive, and they are water resistant so I can wear them in the snow or rain. It's important to have a lot of support around the ankles when hiking so you don't twist something .. Och!!

Warmth, layers, support.

I always come home ready for something hearty and warm.  This is a basic weekday breakfast for me.

I add a pinch of salt and (depending on my mood) might drizzle maple syrup OR olive oil over my oats.

Maybe I'll add a little granola.  I'll share my secret recipe next time!

It was my day off so I've had a chance to catch up on shopping and I'm starting to think about holiday colors and centerpieces.

I received an order of these tapers and a few pillars from Creative Candles. They are clean burning and made from 100% beeswax.

Also had my kitchen cabinets painted recently! I chose  white with a little taupe for the main section and then a black bean color for under my island (a two toned look).  You can see them in the background of this photo. Hardware is on it's way. Gosh.. so many choices! I might go with this and the matching pull. Still a work in progress.

..also bought these for the fall. Testing out different colors together.. I cut and dried my antique hydrangeas. Love the muted colors!

I'm trying to figure out what to put with this .. eventually I will come up with some sort of centerpiece :) ..a splash of red?

I like this too! The bosc pears are so pretty AND delicious paired with your favorite cheeses.
Hope you've had a nice week. Any weekend plans?

  1. Hi Leslie,

Wow! So many neat things here! Your walking route looks so pretty. I've never heard of olive oil on oatmeal, great idea. And, I'm partial to red, so that apple is the way to go! Thanks for sharing such a great variety of tidbits! Can't wait to see your new cupboards!

    Have a great weekend!

oatmeal is the perfect breakfast for me and what i've reached for since paris, but i haven't drizzled it with olive oil!

  4. Leslie .. happy week-end! You are an amazing inspiration to me; Looking at your oatmeal (soooo yummy looking), I'm going to start making it for the cold mornings that have crept up on us, here too. Can't wait for you to share your secret granola recipe... and I'm going to give it(oatmeal) a try with a drizzle of olive oil .. sounds like a great substitute.
Just followed your link to merrell ~ I need a good pair. Do they fit pretty true to size ... I'm usually a size 6 ~ or would you suggest going the half size? LuLu Lemon is my fav... worth every penny.

Both the apple and pear look great ... maybe a combination of both. Looks like Layla enjoys the hike as much as her mama.

Wishing you a beautiful week-end and that you are feeling better ... hugs and blessings, C. (HHL)

  5. Loving the fall colors here too. I would have never thought to drizzle olive oil on oatmeal. Might have to give that a try. I love using fresh fruit for decor. Layla is adorable. Kylee is going crazy being able to see all the birds in the trees now that many of the leaves have dropped.

  6. Your pictures of the woods are so lovely, and remind me of when I lived in Princeton. Loved the late autumn walks in the woods there!

  8. Hi Leslie,

I enjoyed seeing where you went walking, through the gorgeous autumn trees and isn't it really one of the best forms of exercise to start the day.
Do hope that you are feeling better and have been able to have a relaxing weekend

  9. Hi Leslie,
I'm happy to hear you got some help with modern meds, sometimes you just have to get some assistance! Your oatmeal looks delicious and we're huge oatmeal fans here, I've never heard of putting olive oil on it, I also noticed the bottle says sweet and fruity. Is it literally sweet?
I love the dried hydrangea when it gets that muted green and touch of burgandy color on it. The pears are so beautiful this time of year.
I'm an avid walker and am going to look into these shoes. I recently had purchased some Nike's that were meant to be like walking barefoot, but I have an issue now with one of my heals so I am looking for something with lots more support. (sorry I started talking too much).
Enjoy your weekend and hope your 100% at the beginning of the new week.
    xo,
    Karen

Love the photo of Layla! You're such a good mom to walk them daily....I need to walk my baby more.
I'd love to see your cabinets after it's finished. I'm considering new cabinets vs. painting/refinishing mine.
Hope you're having a good weekend!

Layla's cute and looks like she had a dip, Dylan's still swimming in our forty degree weather...brrrr. I love your candlesticks and if you don't mind I'm off to purchase a pair myself.

  16. GOOD MORNING LESLIE!

I too have had a crazy but productive week of making out orders for retailers and other art events coming my way. I am barely getting a chance to sit down to see my comments and to visit my favorite blogs! I saw you had a new post up yesterday, but didn't have a chance to visit.

First of all, your Layla is DARLING! Secondly, my husband and I have always been walkers, but this summer, we discovered the many hilly parks just in our neighborhood. What consistent hill walking has done for us is so wonderful. My husband had knee pain earlier this year, but a trip to the Mayo Clinic for extensive xrays rule out any major problems, so we took the the hills in confidence.

I AM INTRIGUED about using olive oil in my oatmeal! I would have never thought of it, but come to think of it, in the South of France, olive oil is used in a sweet bread, with orange water! I must try this.

Thank you for your kind visit and I am going for a walk this morning; do you believe it was like summer here yesterday?

    ENJOY A HEALTHY DAY! Anita

  18. Your walking trail is so pretty and Layla is a doll.......busy busy week for us trying to recoup from the hurricane. Was in Boston which was a nice break and its always fun and comforting to get back to blogland (my happy place)! I love your granola idea and I eat oatmeal all the time in the winter. Never would have thought to put olive oil in it though? Will give it a try! I love walking but am a bit of a wimp..it has to be between 55 and 70 and perfectly sunny, then I will go. And did I mention no humidity? Bad for my hair...lol.On those days I wear a baseball cap and deal with my flathead when I get home. Have a great Sunday!

  25. Hope you're feeling better Leslie. It's been a rainy and dreary day here today. It seems as if Fall has finally decided to show up. We've had lovely warm sunny days thus far, but afterall it is November 11th, so one cannot complain too much. Most of the leaves are off the trees here as well, as the garden surrenders to Autumn and prepares for it's cold winter nap. On a chilly November morning that oatmeal looks just right.
    Have a great week.

  36. Love the 'before and after' pictures of the tree, it's a great way of showing nature's ways. I wouldn't mind walking a bit more, but living in London means that I generally make do with parks rather than big open forests... Thanks for your lovely comment on my blog :-) Have a great - and hopefully relaxed and healthy - week xo

  37. Hiya sweets!! Just wanted to come by and say a thank you for joining my new page, I appreciate it very much!! And please don't worry about having to keep up with both pages. My new blog will most likely be sporadic, still figuring that out, as I don't want people to think they have to always comment on both of my blogs, as I know it's a lot keeping up with blogs as it is :) And the posts on my new blog are going to be quite short or more picture based, so it's easier as well :) But, I'm really happy to have you there as well :) I hope you'll enjoy it and have a wonderful week :)

  38. I really appreciate your visit and comment Leslie. I have been remiss on my walking and exercise this past summer but am back into it now. Loved seeing your walking path and your fur baby. My dog, Ben, a retriever, practically dances when I say the word "walk". It's raining today and cold but I am going to do my best to walk anyway. xo

  40. I hope you are feeling better, Leslie. I've slowly catching up on my reads. My daughter's third birthday was Friday, and I've been swamped. When I was on the detox, I ate a lot of rolled oats. I need to add that back into my routine breakfast.

  51. Hi Leslie!!!

I hope you are feeling better! It's so hard to get anything done when all you want to do is lay your head on a pillow.

I am a BIG walker. This morning was chilly so I thought I would do an indoor exercise class, but by the time I dropped my boys at school and walked the dog, the sun was out and I couldn't resist heading out. Fresh air always feels good. And, I love walking with friends too!!

Creative candles are my favorite tapers and I recently have been loving their pretty light blue color.

Wishing you a wonderful rest of the week!
