REFLECTION, continuing on from last week...

Over the years I've helped children, teens, men, and women, look and feel better about themselves and to be pro active with regards to their health .
Diabetes, heart disease, eating disorders and weight loss, obesity.. that was my past. Helping people to figure out to improve their health and well being. To be WELL.
WELLNESS: FREEDOM from illness
WELLNESS: FREEDOM from illness
Of particular interest to me are women and how they perceive maturity or aging. Cover it up, tighten it up, reshape it, but whatever you do don't show it because according to our media led culture it is not the preferred state to be in.
If I ask you to define beauty, what would you say?
A sparkle in the eyes
Laugh lines! They represent a life that's been lived well!
Character
Confidence
Peace
Wisdom
Our beauty can be enhanced if we are happy, sleep well, manage our stress, eat and exercise in moderation.
Make up is fun and can make us feel pretty. Drawing attention to our natural beauty rather than trying to cover something seems like a reasonable approach.

A new series for you.
To discuss whatever you want regarding skin, nutrition, body image, or exercise. Just light hearted general information here, nothing heavy.
To discuss whatever you want regarding skin, nutrition, body image, or exercise. Just light hearted general information here, nothing heavy.
This has been the question of the week in my office:
"Now that summer is over, my skin is breaking out and I'm feeling dry.. even my hair is dry"
42 year old female
As the season changes, so does our skin. Level of humidity, what we eat, increased stress, and hormonal fluctuation all factor in to how our skin is looking.
As we get older the rate that our skin naturally sloughs off slows down so it's easy for our pores to get clogged. Cleansing with an exfoliating cleanser, or one with AHA may help increase cellular turnover, however it can also irritate sensitive skin so be careful what you use. I usually recommend sampling a product prior to purchasing it.

I usually recommend sampling a product prior to purchasing it.
Foods containing vitamin C and oils coming from fish, nuts, and avocado are important for skin health and can keep the skin and from feeling too dry.
As we mature, estrogen levels drop causing a reduction in natural oil production and a thinning of the skin. To help out, we can switch to a rich, and emollient filled lotion. Weekly exfoliation with a gentle scrub (micro beads are best) might also help. If you have skin sensitivities or any areas where the skin is raw, irritated, or sore, stay away from any type of scrub. A visit to your Dermatologist or Medical Doctor is recommended if a skin problem becomes chronic or worsens.
Hair can feel dry and lack luster particularly if grey hair is showing up. The cuticle gets thick or course and will not reflect light the way it used to. Ask your hair dresser about glosses and masks for your hair and go easy on all the processing. A healthy diet rich in essential fatty acids will also get your locks looking lustrous!
If you'd like to ask a question, feel free to contact me. Make sure you tell me your age.. or at least what decade you are in :) so I can get an idea of where you are at with regards to skin needs.
I will use your name (and blog) ONLY if you ask me to, otherwise your comment will be posted as the one above is.

Oh do you have any tips for Roseacea? Hubs is 40 and has just developed it.
ReplyDeleteHello Leslie, I knew it! I knew that You have something to do with healthy style of life :) I always look at You (on Your blog of course) like on a beautiful woman, with wparkling eyes.... You are the best example of Your definition of beauty :) I' ve decided to lead healtier lifistyle, so I practise every day, eat more vegetables and trying not to get upset. But I have problem, like all...
ReplyDeleteGreat idea on new series :)

Great idea, Leslie! I look forward to reading the questions and answers. I do notice all the fashion magazines use too much photo shopping.....not a wrinkle in sight.

SUCH a great idea!!!! I have so many questions...where do I begin:) Love the idea, and no doubt this will generate a lot of conversation and wisdom sharing:) Great idea Leslie.....
ReplyDeleteHi Leslie,
ReplyDeleteWonderful post you have shared, and your job must be so rewarding helping people with dermatology and aesthetics problems.
I agree with you, so important to eat well, look after ourselves with exercise and sleep well, makes for a healthy person. I know how after exfoliating, can leave my skin feeling better and more youthful.
I look forward to reading more advice from you.
Happy weekend
Hugs

Leslie,
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to this series! Always nice to get information and advice from someone that promotes healthy living instead of surgery and chemicals.
I would love some information on food for hair growth! I have thin hair and as I age it feels as if it is getting thinner, perhaps there are foods that would help with that? And maybe topicals to use in place of chemical added shampoos?
Thanks and any help is greatly appreciated, Elizabeth
What a great post, and beautiful photos! I love your definition of beauty, especially laugh lines :) Looking forward to your new series!
ReplyDeleteVery good post an it's so true. My skin is different already. Thanks for the sweet visit! Xo
ReplyDeleteGreat post...If I lived closer I would make an appointment with you. You have a lot of knowledge and I love how you live what you believe, a healthy life style. Looking forward to your new series.
ReplyDeleteLeslie,
ReplyDeleteMy skin is acting exactly the way you described! Great tips. I had no idea about your specialty. It sounds like a great thing to do and rewarding. I can't wait to read all your advice!

My skin is quite sun damaged and I always use sunscreen now, but the damage is already done! x
ReplyDeleteFabulous idea, Leslie....I'm looking forward to your new series...you have so much knowledge to share ;-)
ReplyDeleteI believe beauty comes from within..it is an inner confidence a peace and at my age a little self acceptance...be happy, smile and be kind all these things reflect in your face...can't wait to read your new post!

Good morning Leslie! This is a fascinating subject for me, as I had prepared to study nutrition long ago. The science classes however, helped me determine that this was not the route for me, but I still take great self-interest in the topic for my own health. I have found that eating the right foods for SO LONG, that it has affected my skin and hair health in a great way. One thing however, is with age, I have developed a strange little rash at the corner of my eye. The doc thought it was rosecea. It itches and has caused what seems to be a stubborn stye! I need to go get it looked at again.
ReplyDeleteI tried a hair mask the other day of olive oil and egg yolk. WHAT A WONDERFUL SURPRISE! My hair was so shiny, I could NOT believe it. It is really fun to maintain our bodies from the inside and out, isn't it?
Have a lovely day, Anita
This is great Leslie and I thank you. The only question I have is about winter/cold skin care. Since I hike Dylan dog every day including in snowstorms my face can take a little bit of a beating in the cold and wind. Aside from wearing a facemask, not going to happen since I get claustrophobic, what can I use to protect my face from the harsh winter? I’m 52 years young and in menopause so I have dry to sensitive skin. Thank you so much and I love this new series!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your Sunday!

Debra~
This is awesome because I have been seeing such bad skin changes that may have to do with stress and using products that were to harsh for my face. Actually, I really need to take my boys to the dermatologists for breakouts. Would you recommend that they get facials? 17 and 14
ReplyDeleteI would love to visit you for a consultation! I am experiencing all of the above!
ReplyDeleteI believe due to aging and then the past year of 3 surgeries and 4 hospital stay, I am taking extra Vitamin d, Omega 3 complex. resting more, eating much better, any suggestions Leslie?

Great series, Leslie. I will enjoy reading about this. I personally think I am in the perimenopause era. Hormones are really off.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea, Leslie. Women helping women. I love it. That is one of the things I love about blogging, all the great women and men out here passing on information, it's like having a great big family. Good job.
ReplyDeleteLeslie,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great series. I am thrilled that you endorse embracing your age, looking your best with what you have, and I appreciate the tips on what some of us more mature (read older) women should eat to be our best.
Karen
Thank you so much on your beautiful comment about the whole distance thing Leslie, it really meant a lot to me and you're right bloggers are such a great support system. Today it hit me - I love your posts because they are so all encompassing and balanced. Look at the photos, it's not just about clothes or hair but food and decor, I love that. Sometimes it's difficult striking a balance in our everyday real lives but it's nice to strive to achieve that on our blogs, and I think you have. xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteObviously I love this post Leslie! To me beauty is the outer beauty, but it has to come along with the inner beauty, they go hand in hand and it shows. A bubbly personality, having fun and being confident (not always but in general)is great attributes I think. And a great hair cut and colour. The hair is worth investing extra in since we carry it every day! And also, surround yourself with uplifting people, that uplifts you! xo Caroline
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea, Leslie! Love that you're sharing your knowledge, philosophy and wonderful outlook on life!
ReplyDeleteFascinating background, I look forward to seeing what people have to say and am sure we have all the same concerns about aging, which society does not make easy!
ReplyDeleteA great idea for a series. Beauty is certainly about confidence and that sparkle in the eyes and I totally agree about trying a sample of a product before purchasing. It certainly avoids expensive mistakes. I was pleased to see kiwi fruit and avocados as I love them!

Great post Leslie. I am looking forward to your series. Have a beautiful day!
ReplyDeleteI love that you're doing this, Leslie! You have such a wealth of knowledge and so many people will benefit from reading your new series. Can't wait to read more :) xoxo
ReplyDeletethis is wonderful. i believe beauty is so many things. i think the care one takes of themselves is one of the top things, it shows a sense of love for self and pride. i think to be able to love and care for others you must know how to do this for yourself first.
ReplyDeletei remember when i was young i saw a close-up photo of mother Teresa's hands and they looked paper thin and full of wrinkles - i decided that was beauty - looking at a pair of hands knowing they had done so much.
Enjoyed this post. Aging in America is difficult, even for a self-confident woman. We need reinforcement!
ReplyDeleteKaryn
Such a difficult thing for women especially - signs of aging. I love your positive outlook, and smile lines are very beautiful indeed. Also funny thing - was just planning to purchase avocados this week for sandwiches! Yummm :)

What a wonderful second career. Apparently if you have something wrong with your skin its really depressing so you are doing great work. I do fight the wrinkles though I don't mind the crows feet at all as they remind me of smiling, its the sags and bags under the eyes that make you look tired that pester me.
ReplyDeleteHi Leslie ~~ I enjoy nutrition and health as well, :) Do you happen to know what might cause a rash around my finger, (yes, the finger where I wear my wedding band). I have had to stop wearing it. I am allergic to nickel but really do not think there is nickel in my ring. I have heard that pineapple can cause these types of reactions. Have you ever heard of that? I do eat pineapple, I guess I should try eliminating it. Any thoughts?
ReplyDeleteThank you, you are awesome.
Sincerely,
Michele

Oh, wow! Seeing this just made my day! What a great idea for a blog! I will begin to write down my questions to ask because I have so many! You touched on every subject! I can't wait for your input! I had no idea this is what you did!!! You may be my new best friend! ( I already loved you anyway!) Loved this post!!!! Thanks so much for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteThis second career sounds perfect for you. Aging is inevitable for all of us but there's no reason why it has to slow us down. My mom is 60 and looks like she's in her 40's so I hope I inherited this from her though I'm also taking care of myself. This series sounds fantastic! Thank you for sharing your wisdom and I look forward to learning more from you.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely week Leslie!

ReplyDeleteLove this idea. I can't think of a question, but if I do, I'll ask you.
ReplyDeleteHI Leslie, thanks so much for showing us this other side of your life. As a 44 year old woman of course I want to hear more about skincare and I also love your take on beauty from within...we really need that as we age!

As always your posts are inspirational and thought provoking. I'm 59 now, and i'm having to learn to accept aging. It's pretty strange actually. There is so much out there that you can do to spruce up if you have the money, and the guts. I have thought about botox for those big ole creases above my eyes, but the thought of injecting botulism that close to my brain freaks me out... I don't know what to think about it all, but i'm pretty sure i don't like it so far, smile... I think it's going to be fun to see the questions and your answers...

Hi Leslie, you are a wealth of information and advice. Getting older can be challenging. We strive to look our best and keep the wrinkles at bay. I love reading your posts. Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful tips.
ReplyDeleteHi Leslie,
ReplyDeleteA most fitting post (and future series) on the state of our culture today, one that places so much importance on youth. Looking forward to more of your invaluable expertise, especially on thinning, lackluster hair. A bit of a shocker for me, who was used to a thick and shiny mane most of her life!
Thanks for sharing.

Good morning beautiful Leslie!
ReplyDeleteThank you for coming to visit with me yesterday! Poetry is an exciting source of communication and is something I am exploring, thanks to BLOGGING!
May you have a beautiful day! Anita
Your posts are always so interesting Lelsie. I must admit i am more of a photo person but in your case i like to read your writtings. Great once again.

Great post (and love that first picture) with a lot of common sense and good advice. I always think that people who take their beauty regime too seriously actually look the opposite of attractive - too much botox, too much dieting, too much exercise - and the ones who are a little more 'happy go lucky' look much better... Have a lovely evening, I'm off to get a glass of red wine - full of anti-oxidants ;-) xo
ReplyDeleteLeslie you are so beautiful on the inside AND outside. Your care for your readers is amazing! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteLeslie, I love how informative your posts always are.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful, interesting and informative post. Really thorough and wonderful facts and advice. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteLeslie, I really like that you're so open and honest about these topics and I can see why you've helped so many women across the years. I think beauty can be defined in so many ways and as soon as someone narrows it down to just one definition is when it's easy to feel sad and insecure.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
xoDale
What a wonderful idea, Leslie. Can't wait to hear the questions! Beautiful images...
ReplyDeleteI can definitely tell a difference in my skin when I sleep more. It's amazing how not sleeping well affects your skin. xo
ReplyDeleteLeslie, you make so many good points. I'm really working on doing things like adding more sleep and healthier food to my diet and worrying less about the botox thing. It's definitely a choice. I think this will be a really great series that you've started.
ReplyDeletexo Mary Jo
i need to email you about this!!!!
ReplyDeleteLeslie,
ReplyDeleteYes, a sparkle in the eyes definately defines beauty, and PEACE. You have worked in so many different areas, how wonderful...and it all has to do with the well being of people. I have heard that lemons have many health benefits, and I eat them often. I love the picture of the red dress. I am so glad that you stopped by to see Nel's wedding post. It was the first time that we put pictures of us on our blog. Keep spreading your knowledge around, and thank you.

Just a quick not to say Happy Weekend and I need those yummy wooly sock on my legs! Brrr
ReplyDeleteI can tell I'm going to learn a lot from your answers! :)
ReplyDeletemy lines really bother me. they're getting deeper and multiplying. i'm 46. i don't need to look 10 yrs younger, but i wish i could appear less tired and tense! don't you hate that when you are thinking good thoughts when a pic is snapped, and you look angry? i think beauty sleep is underrated.
