With over 1000 different brands of tequila available, it's good to know that they can be divided into two categories, 100% pure blue agave or 'mixed' tequila.
Pure agave can present colored if it's been aged in barrels, otherwise it's clear.
Gold tequilas (mixed) are usually young and are used as mixers in drinks. These mixed tequilas are about 1/2 sugar and a gold because they are colored.
"Tequila Worm" myth
This is a misconception that began as a marketing gimmick in the 1940s. The 'worm' is the larval form of a moth that lives in the agave plant. Finding one while processing indicates an infestation and lower quality product. We've all heard those stories during our college years about the hallucinogenic potential when swallowed (not that I ever hung out with that crowd ;) ...
'Tis' margarita season and so here is leslie's skinny margarita recipe!!
Start with a pitcher filled with ice and a beer (that's my husbands and notice it's a Belgium beer?)
For two margaritas:
1 large lime for 2 shots of tequila (I sometimes use more lime but this is what my husband does)
About a 1/2 shot agave or triple sec. Agave is supposed to be "healthier" but recent studies show the contrary..
Stir and serve up, no ice and I always ask for salt. The last step is a splash of sparkling mineral water. The little bit of fizz makes it the perfect drink to serve at a girls night-out gathering.
...muy bueno
Random things.. sweet doves in my yard.
Such a pretty day today ~ Layla learning to swim!
Skyline ~ great view of the Space Needle

I could never get my head around tequila but the husband loves it. I'm more of a vodka and wine sort of gal and I don't like anything messing up my vodka...;) My best friend lives in Seattle and I will hopefully be there this fall, either there or Houston, we want to shop.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your day!

I'm afraid I can't anymore. But me and tequila,
we have good memories together :)
Sounds delish!!! And so funny, J and I were in the liquor store Friday before heading on out to the beach house and we had a whole conversation about the different types of tequilla. Left with a bottle of Patron in my hand :)
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week! Oh and yes I love Bobbi Brown beach. I've used the oil for years and I even use the body lotion. In fact when I read your comment I look in my drawer at work and pulled out a very old bottle of it and put it on my hands. Still smells amazing!

Ooh great post leslie and I had no idea that agave wasn't less healthier, I really like that you shared this too because margaritas are my have and I feel like I can't drink them as much because they have so many calories so I'm going to try your recipe. Thanks again for sharing and the pics at the end are really cute too.

Great cocktail recipe! I don't know any drinks - so this is helpful - and healthy too! (agave counts as healthy, right?) .
ReplyDeleteInteresting info about the worm; cheers to me never getting one of those in my drink. Yuck. Halucinogenic effects not worth it.
I'm loving these random shots of yours!! Did you take that one of the dove in motion?? How the heck did you capture that? Was your camera set on a really fast shutter speed? I don't understand how it didn't blur - fantastic shot!!
-Gabrielle
Yes agave has turned out to be a bit of a party popper.
ReplyDeleteI have only had two margaritas in my lives, yes I must remedy this at once.
I love a good cocktail and if it is a skinny one, I'm into it :)))) My BF is always preparing me the well known Cosmopolitan, well, it's time for a summer refresher: margarita, muchaco! :))))) Lovely you get to sail, Leslie! :*
