Vanity

I'm not a fanatic but I do try to limit my exposure to harmful chemicals, recycle, eat well, etc.  My question is - if you are following a "natural" lifestyle is it okay to intervene a little with mother nature?  We all know what we SHOULD look like, but things change over time - what about that crease forming in-between my brows or those deep crows feet around my eyes?  Would I be a hypocrite  it I were to get Botox (a muscle-paralyzing toxin that relaxes a muscle temporarily) or a cosmetic procedure done to reduce the visible signs of aging after preaching a holistic life style?

The choices we make about what we do to our outer-selves is a personal one that must be carefully thought out.  It's important to consider the risks and benefits of all that we do.  This is a deeply personal matter and one should not judge one's decision to intervene or not.  Most women want to look natural, age gracefully, and have no intention of being overly augmented or pulled to the extent that they look like they've been standing in front of a fan.  We usually see the the extremes in TV and in magazines - giving us a certain impression of those women.  Cosmetic aesthetics is expensive and needs to be maintained. Many women simply can't afford it so it's not an option.  What if you had the money to do what you wanted? Would that change things?

Will correcting an imperfection make you happier? Some women fear not being beautiful enough or that they are loosing their beauty and some women take aging in stride - don't mind going gray, having those dreaded age spots, and deep lines.  The thinking regarding intervention isn't all or nothing - and I believe you can land someone in the middle, and that's okay - IF that's what works for you.  Thankfully there are many noninvasive skin care options that can be done to help us look beautiful at any age, without getting the old knife or firing up a laser.

Figuring out the perfect skin care program takes time.  I usually consult with a patient and follow up multiple times.. offering samples, reviewing options, and building trust.  Unfortunately there is no magic wand to turn back aging, however we CAN slow things down and make subtle corrections.

Part of my job is to stay up to date on products.  I will be evaluating the Epionce line over the next several weeks.  There are many wonderful skin care lines available and I will say that I cherry pick (choosing from a variety of lines) all the time.  For patients with compromised skin, sensitive skin, or cosmetically treated skin, these products may be helpful.  The focus is on lipid barrier repair. The lipid barrier protects our skin and tends to diminish over time (age) and is easily damaged during cosmetic procedures or if skin is very sensitive.  This line is also paraben free.  A side note on parabens -there is controversy about the controversy of parabens, however I think trying to limit preservative use is probably a good idea.  Some women avoid preservatives and then go get their hair colored (lots of chemicals in hair dye!) - in fact stepping outside, we are exposed to radiation and all kinds of things that, over time may be harmful.

Here we are at home looking at part of my vanity -  this is the cleaned up version.  I always joke that my vanity looks like a chemistry lab.

The line is very simple with Lytic Gel for oily/acne prone skin and Gentle foaming Cleanser for normal to dry skin.  Love the creamy texture of the eye and face creams and the toners are refreshing.  I mention this line because {today} we are discussing cosmetic aesthetics - skin that might be under going, or recovering from a treatment.  This line would be a good one to evaluate if you are very sensitive, acne prone, or have been treating the skin with the intention of correction. The products we are able to pick up at random at a spa, or over the counter, will {by law} contain a minimal amount of active ingredients (those that will correct something on the skin) If you are happy with your skin, OTC products are fine.  If you have troubled skin and/or are trying to correct something, you may need a product with higher levels of the active ingredient{s} - therapeutic products are generally found in medical offices.

I love the consistency of their face and eye creams.  There are richer creams for mature skins and lite lotions for an acne prone complexion.  I'm such a girly-girl and love all this stuff  - always fall for the pretty containers!  D. thinks I'm nuts, but when I go to Paris in June I'll be shopping for those French lines {love, love, love} however I always have my old stand-by products with those therapeutic ingredients. My skin is tolerant now that I'm old so I can play with pretty much whatever and want :)

I change things up all the time and I'm not making any recommendations for you personally - just sharing information.

Now let's get personal..  I've had Botox injected in the deep crows feet on the sides of my eyes.  Do I do it regularly? No I do not!  Why? because I would like my patients to see what a middle aged (ouch- that was painful!) woman looks like when she takes care of herself - void of fillers and augmented facial features. So what do I do to keep my groove on?  I grew up on the beaches of Southern CA and have lots of sun damage. Living in the Pacific Northwest has been a good move for me - ha! Number one is Sunscreen - find one that you like and will wear regularly. Make sure you get a full skin exam every year at your Dermatology office.  Find out what kind of skin care works best for you and try before your buy.  Get sleep and manage (can't avoid it) your stress.  Don't be hard on yourself with regards to diet.  Enjoy life in moderation. I eat everything! - love chocolate with caramel and salt on top, drink wine, and rumor has it that I make the best skinny margarita around! Exercise {carefully} and listen to your body.  Last but not least.. lots of sex  romance and remember that your true beauty comes from within and shows through the sparkle in your eyes -you are all gorgeous!!

just some models....beautiful as always ;)

  2. I love your post, very well written. I am 54 and will have something done later if I feel I need it. Right now my dollars are spent on my home Reno and I also want a pool. I am beginning to see a difference but taking care each day makes a difference if only in your attitude. I remember my mother wearing a strip of scotch tape on her brow crease, which cracks me up..sometimes she would forget she had it. One of the most beautiful women I knew was in her mid 70s,barely any makeup, red lips and her grey hair in a bun. Her trick? Her very sparkly eyes..maybe still a lot of romance?

  4. I love this post! I believe it's about the balance. A woman should take care of herself and look beautiful so she feels her best. It should come from a place of good self esteem not low self esteem. Like, "I"m worth it" not "I need the world to adore me". Get what I'm saying? I'd love to have a consultation with you!! At 43 I look really good but there are some little things....

  7. very very interesting post. I'm not quite there yet, but if I can afford, and if I find nothing that gives me similar results I will try Botox one day. at the moment that's as far as I would go. no surgery for me (but who knows what happens if/after I have children...). I don't think it's hypocritical (I'm advocating sport, healty eating and living as well, just privately ;) - it's a decision everyone has to make for themselves.

I'm quite aware that I'm manipulated to some extent by the media, and that, no matter how hard I try, I will never be entirely free of this. all I can do is stay open and critical and make my own decisions as best as I can.

  8. I'm one of those women who doesn't mind the gray hairs I have in fact I'm looking forward to it all going gray in tones of silver and white. I do however take very good care of my skin and have been getting facials every month for a decade now. Good skin care is half the battle and using a good skin line is the other. I use an all natural product called Dr. Hauschka and love it. Remember that exercise, eating well and getting plenty of sleep is the other half of the battle. I'm menopausal and sleep just fine because I get plenty of exercise during the day.

    I hope that helps!

  9. What a great post. I am turning 50 this summer and honestly, I'm having quite a hard time dealing with it. Not so much the number, but everything that goes with it. Body re-positioning itself without permission, lack of strength to do the things I use to do etc. Yes, there are things I would like to have taken care of but at this point in my life I'll do the best I can with what I have. Thanks for the information.

  12. brilliant post Leslie! You look absolutely faboulous in your profile picture! so your routine is defo working! I use dermologica products - I would be interested to know what you think of those - but reading (or rather trying to read) the back of the bottle - there are alot of ingredients that I just don't know or understand. So, I've been thinking of trying Dr. Hauschka like Debra. Re cosmetic route, I think that's a very personal choice and if a woman wants to, then good luck to her! I haven't had any surgery but then I'm not yet 40 (in 3 weeks - yikes!!) maybe I'll feel differently in 10 years time . . .

  13. Great post! I think everyone is different, and if someone wants to change their appearance to make them feel better about themselves I say go for it! I believe some women will feel better after they've had whatever it is they want done! For me as of today have no desire on injecting anything to my face, I will stick to products!!

  15. Leslie dearest!

You know, I have been blessed with good genes from my dad, who at the age of 82 at his death, looked amazing. It was a wonder to see. I also eat right and keep my weight at a healthy range, but when those changes DO start to slowly appear, it is actually, a blessing. Like you, I try to keep things simple, natural, and true. So this is my take on the matter, and what I have been trying to do for the last year:

    Smile.
    Be kind.
Dress well for work and use accessories that compliment me (it costs a lot less than BOTOX!)
    KEEP DREAMING, PLANNING, PLOTTING, DOING.

There is really nothing else that I can think of to nourish that which will remain forever!

AND THANK YOU FOR COMING TO VISIT ME TODAY! Oh, I cannot wait to see 17 mile drive again and CHINA COVE! Have a wonderful day dearest! Anita

  19. I love your insight, Leslie! I haven't done anything yet, but wouldn't be opposed to it. There's a lot to be said for eating right and exercising. I do wish I would've used sunscreen when I was younger, I'm from the baby oil and bake yourself generation...ugh! I feel young and then I see a photo and think when did that happen? :) That being said, I'm happy and thankful and that goes a long way!

  20. I like your perspective. I think we're all looking for that magical fountain of youth aren't we. I look to my mom as my beauty guru since she's 60 and looks at least 10 years younger. She doesn't use a ton of products but she eats right, exercises and avoids the sun like the plague. We all just need to find what works for us.

  21. Great Post! Like you, I have a lot of sun damage from So California living and pam(simple details) from the baby oil and bake yourself generation. I exercise, eat right, and feel 10 years younger. However, the mirror says I look 10 years older.... ugh! Considering botox, especially for my son's wedding, but don't know if that is enough!! Anyways, appreciate your point of view!

  40. As I am nearing the
    end of my 40's, my
goal is to be as fit
    and radiant as I can
    be ~ not younger, as
I know that is just not
    possible. So far, no
    cosmetic procedures.
    My skin is sensitive and
I have this hunch that I
    wouldn't respond well
    to fillers....and Botox just
scares me. So, my aim is
    for glowing good health,
even if it means wrinkles : ) !!

    Happy Wednesday,

  41. Great post, though I don't like the thought that I'm "supposed to look a certain way". I'm too scared of even trying Botox never mind anything more invasive. I try to look after my skin with creams and (at least to an extent) nutrition and by hoping for the best... One thing I've found to be absolutely fantastic is a Clarins facial oil. Especially in Winter with the cold outside and the dry heating air inside, it's a real treat for my skin.

Anyway, I'm now one of your happy followers and look forward to more great posts. Have a lovely evening xo

  43. Skin care is hard for me, as I am allergic it seems to most everything...even the "natural" items....many cosmetics have natural items....for example corn, wheat (in some form) and melon (those fruit things used in skin care creams)....It has become such a minefield for me, I just go without and rarely use anything....I would love to find something that was safe for my skin, felt good, was affordable and smelled good...

  50. Leslie, I really loved this post! And I cannot wait to read more about this new line. You know it is funny because I have always been into skincare and when I finally found what worked for me (and after many years), I deployed to a location where the temperature most of the year was 130F (yes, I'm not making that up, and my skin was a disaster. It was like my skin could not get enough moisture. That was three years ago and I am still having issues. So, even though I don't comment much I love your posts about skincare. Maybe I can find something that works for me.
